Harborview Medical Center (HMC)
HMC Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is a critical safety net for disadvantaged patients with severe mental illness and substance abuse, both acute and chronic. Annually, more than 1800 patients are admitted to HMC's 61 inpatient beds and specialized psychiatric/substance abuse program; more than 3000 consultations are provided to hospitalized medical and surgical patients for both mental illness and addictive disordes; 9000 patients are treated in medical primary care clinics, long-term psychiatry clinics, and geriatric outreach programs; and 90,000 visits for care of severe and persistent mental illness occur at Harborview’s Outpatient Mental Health Services. Most importantly, the specialized psychiatric emergency service (PES) evaluates 7000-9000 individuals annually. In addition to this remarkable safety-net function, Department faculty members at HMC sponsor a rapidly expanding program in psychiatric outcomes research and in cutting-edge laboratory-based neuroscience research.Hospital-based Services
