Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship

The Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship offers a 12-month, ACGME-accredited, full-time training experience in Seattle. Completion entitles fellows to apply for an added board qualification in Geriatric Psychiatry. The Puget Sound VA funds two fellowship slots each year.

The fellowship is focused on clinical care and scholarship. Fellows are expected to develop and demonstrate expertise in the diagnosis and clinical management of common and uncommon neuropsychiatric conditions among older adults, to understand the aging process, and to appreciate the interplay between physical and mental health. Fellows are encouraged to engage in research during their fellowship year; no prior experience in research is required. For those who wish to pursue research beyond the fellowship year, the University of Washington offers additional structured research training, including T32 fellowships in geriatric mental health services and Alzheimer's disease. A MIRECC fellowship focuses on Veteran mental health. Completing the clinical fellowship and a research fellowship provides outstanding preparation for an academic faculty position.

Fellowship clinical experiences occur at the three sites of the University of Washington (the Seattle VA Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, and the UW Medical Center), as well as community sites and include inpatient, consultation-liaison, neurology, neuropsychology, primary care, long-term care, and palliative care rotations. Training experiences are tailored to the interests and background of each fellow.

The University of Washington has a long tradition of leadership in geriatric psychiatry. Geriatric psychiatrists are active in research and leadership in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. There are numerous opportunities for research across many domains of geriatric psychiatry, including health services research, clinical trials, neuroimaging, neuropathology, neuropsychiatry, and neuroscience.

The fellowship has 100% pass rate on the first occasion for graduates taking the added qualification exam.
