Natural decreases in hormone levels from aging in men are associated with depression, poorer cognitive functioning and risk for dementia. Our previous work in this area has shown that androgen supplementation in healthy older men has some modest, beneficial effects on memory. Currently, we are examining androgen supplementation in older hypogonadal men with sub-syndromal depression. In this manner, we can examine the interaction between mood and cognitive changes from hormone supplementation. We are also examining both cognitive and brain metabolic changes from complete hormone suppression in men undergoing intermittent androgen suppression treatment for prostate cancer. Additional projects include assessment of cognitive processing changes associated with pain medications in older adults, development of a virtual reality spatial memory task, and characterization of cognitive deficits associated with Fronto-temporal Dementia, Cerebellar Ataxia, Lewy Body Dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s disease and Parkinson’s Disease Dementia.
