Bio
Dr. Neumaier is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. His laboratory has been using viral vector strategies to tease apart the contribution of different serotonin receptors to emotional behavior for a number of years. Currently his lab is focusing on drug reward, stress, and fear mechanisms. In addition to studying the role of serotonin receptors in these behaviors, his lab has recently been introducing “engineered” receptors into the brain using these viral vectors. These novel receptors have been altered so that they respond only to a synthetic ligand and not to any endogenous molecules. They are also using light activated receptors for similar purposes. Using viral vectors that selectively target specific phenotypes of neurons, they are using these “molecular switches” to test the role of specific pathways in complex behaviors.
