Bio Noradrenergic Systems in Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease: This project assesses brain noradrenergic system integrity and role in pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). We have demonstrated that compensatory upregulation of surviving locus ceruleus neurons in upregulation of alpha-1 adrenoreceptors contribute to the pathophysiology of agitation/aggression in these dementing disorders. Psychopathology of Alzheimer's Disease: Psychoneuroendocrinology: This project funded by an R01 grant from NIA and Merit Review Grant by the VA explores hypothalamic pituitary adrenocortical (HPA) axis function in aging and Alzheimer's disease. Because high glucocorticoid concentrations appear to endanger hippocampal neurons in older mammals, enhanced HPA axis responsiveness in human aging is a potential contributing factor to the clinical expression of Alzheimer's disease. Studies in human subjects and in nonhuman primates are addressing this possibility.
