In collaboration with UW and VAPSHCS clinicians, molecular geneticists, and statistical geneticists, we are in the process of developing research protocols which will focus on the genetics of mental illness, with emphasis on schizophrenia and post traumatic stress disorder. We will utilize the traditional molecular genetics approach to replicate positive genetic regions previously reported to contain putative genes. In addition, we plan to measure quantitative traits that may cluster in schizophrenic and PTSD families and carry out genetic mapping studies with the goal of finding susceptibility genes that may contribute to the development of these complex genetic disorders.
